Approaches TO EHR User Interface

This page highlights five different approaches to EHRs as explained in the table below.

Type General Characteristics of EHR Product Type of Data Structuring Typical Vendor Example
Template/Pick List Touchscreens, problems lists, templates; forces data into a form that allows retrieval of meaningful reports. Data is structured to billing levels, and often structured via Medcin or Snomed to medical diagnostic levels. To many to list here

Document Scanning/OCR/ICR/NLP Should capture scanned images and automatically classify and index data. Data is unstructured, but may be structured after dictation by NLP technology. This is done by only a few vendors. Normally dictated data is unstructured and difficult to query thereafter. eDOMA for Healthcare -DOMA Technologies
Holt Data Systems
Optio Healthcare Quick Record Suite -Optio Software, Inc.
SRS Chart Manager - SRS Technologies
Wellness Connection - BlueWare

Handwriting/OCR/NLP A form is provided into which a provider writes the data using a stylus or special pen. The data is then converted by handwriting engine to text, and the record stored in the text format. Data is unstructured, but may be structured after dictation by NLP technology. This is done by only a few vendors. If the system uses FORMS and the form fields are mapped to specific data elements, some level of structuring is provided. Normally dictated data is unstructured and difficult to query thereafter. AdvantaChart AdvantaChart

Hybrid Combinations Some systems allow combinations of the above input types. Be aware that these systems have one foundational input type onto which the other have been grafted. Most are Template/Pick List approches that allow other input modalities to capture specific subsets of data. The structuring depends on the design of the system, and generally is no better than the primary or foundational method upon which the multiple input modalities are grafted. The next table features some of the awards that were given to EHR vendors. MSP does not endorse these awards as the criteria used for judging as the products may not be open and transparent. Also, not every EHR vendor enters these competitions. For the MSP Reality EHR Selector™, MSP does not take awards into consideration but offers a different approach; we validate that what the vendor says the product will do is what it actually does and match their product characteristics against the need specifications that each user asserts to the selector.
