EHR Conferences

CONFERENCE RECOMMENDATIONS & INFORMATION

With numerous medical conference presented every year, you can't attend them all - so which ones do you attend? That depends on who you are. If you are a medical practice business manager or doctor, consider HIMSS and your specialty medical society meetings or TEPR. If you're an EHR vendor, and want to reach physicians, consider the various medical society meetings, as neither HIMSS nor TEPR have too many physician from group practices attending. If your a healthcare middleware I.T. vendor, HIMSS and TEPR are good meetings, as there are 300-600 other vendors at these shows. If you are a hospital CIO or work with healthcare I.T. in the inpatient setting or very large clinic, then HIMSS and TEPR are good meetings as a lot of CIOs come to HIMSS and TEPR. In the table below we have listed a few of these conferences and discussed some of the special appeal of each. We have also indicated which of these we attend (coverage will appear in our Industry Alert™ newsletter.

2009

EMR Road Show

Medical Records Institute

The EMR Road Show™ bring some EHR developers to some major cities. See TEPR (Medical Records Institute) website for current schedule. If the Road Show comes near you, you may want to visit it. At the ones we have attended, less than 10 EHR developers per show except in very large cities. Given there are 240 different EHR developers, that isn't a very broad cross-section. A better choice is the MSP EHR Selector, that will at least expose you over 30 of the major EHR developers that account for almost 70% of all EHR licenses currently in use.

AAFP

American Academy of Family Physicians

Features presentations on EHRs as well as many vendors that offer EHRs. Excellent venue for family practitioners to get info on EHRs.

See MSP HOME page for 2009 Conferences Coverage Schedules

MGMA ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Medical Group Management Association

Features presentations on EHRs as well as many vendors that offer EHRs. Many doctors from many specialties, but also many group practice business managers attend this conference.
TEPR 2007 Conference

Medical Records Institute
(2009 TEPR conference)

This is a show with a shrinking attendance. It occurs usually AFTER HIMSS, which is in Chicago this year. HIMSS will have 10 times the number of EHR developers at TEPR, and we think its a better choice if you want to find EHRs for smaller practice specialties.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MOBILE HEALTHCARE

Medical Records Institute (2008) TEPR conference)

This small conference draft about 40 EHR developers, some hospital personnel, and some industry personnel, but not too many group practice personnel. It has vendor beauty contests among vendors who pay $1,000 to have their product rated by industry 'judges'. It also has shoot-out demonstrations based on demo scripts that most of the EHR developers don't follow in demonstrating their systems. Somewhat useful, but go to HIMSS first, as there are 20 times the number of exhibitors.
HIMSS 2007 Conference

Health Information Management & Systems Society (HIMSS)

Hospital Information Technology, CIOs, Large IDN Business Managers, EHR and CPM Vendors, Middleware Vendors, but few group practice personnel. While this is the Grand-Daddy of Healthcare I.T. shows, group practices will get more value from attending smaller, more specific shows like MGMA, AAFP, TEPR and other specialty conferences.
